WHAT IS EDUCATION?
UNDERSTANDING THE ESSENCE OF EDUCATION
The word “education” rings a bell in every mind, but only a few persons understand its true meaning. Before I give what you will come to agree with me is the best concise definition of this age-long word, I will first state what education is not.
What Education Is Not
- Education is not filling students’ heads with the contents of a curriculum just so they can obtain certificates or degrees at the end of such stereotyped programs.
- Education is not basically about following a rigid system that does not give room for innovation or for the expression of creative ideas.
If the above are true—which they are, and which also seem to be the view of most people when you speak of education—what, then, is education? Or what does it really mean to educate an individual?
The Etymology of “Educate”
The English word “educate” comes from the Latin word ēdūcō, from which ēdūcere was derived as the present active infinitive. The word ēdūcere is the Latin root for “educe.”
In other words, “educate” means to educe.
The word “educe” most appropriately means to draw out or bring forth from some basic or potential state; to elicit or to develop.
The Mission of Educating: Drawing Out Potential
From the above, we understand that in the bid to educe ourselves or someone else (possibly a student), we are basically on a mission of evoking (eliciting), drawing out, bringing out, or bringing forth something latent.
This simply means we work at bringing out something that already exists—something present but concealed or inactive.
So what we do is help to bring out what is already existing in a person, which, in this case, is defined as potential (talents or gifts, as the case may be).
True Education: A Definition Rooted in Purpose
From the above, we understand that education is nothing else or less than:
Exposing an individual to the reality of his or her potentials—in a way that inspires passion to develop and express such infinite potentials, while being fully equipped with the confidence required to produce innovative ideas that will:
- Greatly impact society,
- Serve as a transgenerational benefit, and
- Establish a system of structural wealth.
That is the best definition of education you can ever get.
👉 And that’s what we stand for at English Master Institute (EMI) Worldwide, as we remain committed to redefining the status quo of education globally by prioritizing the discovery, development, and exploration of potential.
The Limitation of Certificates Without Potentials
Merely obtaining certificates in a particular field of study is not what defines whether you are educated or not.
What matters more is how aware you are of your inherent potentials, and how you channel your learning in that direction—so you can produce what is valuable enough to attract recognition and reward.
The reason some people produce little or no results—and remain in poor and frustrated conditions despite holding several certificates—is because they don’t understand that money or wealth is only attracted to the perception of value.
That is, a man is only as wealthy as what he offers—which must be perceived to be valuable enough for the recipient to exchange it for a commensurate price.
The Role of Potentials in Wealth Creation
To truly produce something valuable, we must all understand how to maximize our true potentials. That is what was deposited in us by our Heavenly Father to create wealth.
That is why the scripture clearly states that it is God who gives you the power (potentials, talents, gifts—something latent) to get (create) wealth.
There are so many inventions yet to be revealed on earth, and they are hidden in the potentials of every human.
Sadly, many have left the earth without scratching the surface of such potentials, and as such, they ended up not producing anything of meaningful impact before leaving this realm.
The Final Charge: Educe, Don’t Just Pursue Certificates
Don’t simply pursue certificates to hang on your shelf—rather, work at educing yourself for greater productivity.
